Dozer for the Mac menu bar: how it works, what to check

The right side of your menu bar has stopped being scannable. There are cloud clients, a VPN, a password manager, two things you cannot identify, and somewhere among them the one icon you were reaching for. Dozer comes up quickly when you look for a way out of this, and for good reason: it is open source, it is free, and it does the job it claims to do.

It also works in a specific way that is worth understanding before you install it, because the mental model is different from what most people expect. Dozer does not give you a list of icons with checkboxes. It gives you a boundary, and you decide what is hidden by moving icons relative to that boundary. Everything else about living with it follows from that one design decision.

Why the menu bar fills up

It is worth being clear that a crowded menu bar is not a sign of poor housekeeping. The number of applications that install a persistent status item has grown steadily. Messaging, VPN, password management, cloud sync, screen recording, plus the utilities that report battery, network and audio state in more detail than the system does. On a working machine, fifteen or more resident items is ordinary rather than excessive.

Screen geometry then makes it worse. On MacBooks with a camera housing in the middle of the display, items do not merely get crowded, they get pushed behind the notch where they cannot be clicked at all. A layout that fits comfortably on an external display can overflow the moment you undock. That combination, more resident apps and less usable width, is why this whole category of tool exists and keeps existing.

The tools that address it range from free and minimal to paid and elaborate, because the underlying need ranges just as widely. Some people want the clutter folded away and nothing more. Others want icons that appear and disappear according to what they are doing. Dozer sits at the light end of that range, and that is a reasonable place to start.

How Dozer hides icons: a boundary, not a checklist

Dozer places a small item in your menu bar that acts as a divider. Icons on one side of it are hidden when collapsed. Icons on the other side stay visible. Clicking toggles between the two states.

The consequence is that configuration happens on the menu bar itself rather than in a settings window. To change what gets hidden, you move the icon, not a checkbox. macOS provides the mechanism for this: hold Command and drag a menu bar item to reposition it. Some system items can also be dragged off the bar entirely, though third-party icons generally cannot be removed this way, only rearranged.

So the setup routine is: drag everything you rarely need to the hidden side of the divider, leave the things you glance at constantly on the visible side, and you are done. There is very little to learn, and you can be finished within a few minutes of installing.

One thing to know going in: which icons can be moved at all is decided by macOS, not by the tool. Command-dragging works on the great majority of third-party status items, and on most system ones, but a few items behave differently and some cannot be repositioned. If an icon refuses to move, that is the system rather than a fault in the tool, and no menu bar manager built on this mechanism will behave differently. It is a short list of exceptions, and you find them within the first few minutes of arranging.

There is also the question of what survives a restart. macOS remembers the position of most status items between sessions, which is why an arrangement built around a divider usually comes back intact after a reboot. The exception is an item that its application registers fresh on every launch. A newly registered item is inserted at the far left of the bar, and on this model the far left is inside the hidden zone, so an icon that seems to disappear after an app update has generally been placed there rather than lost. Command-dragging it back to the visible side takes a second once you know where to look for it.

The trade-off shows up over months rather than minutes. Because the configuration lives in the positions of the icons, it is only as stable as those positions. Reinstall an app, update macOS, or change your display arrangement, and items can end up on the wrong side of the divider. You then redo the arrangement. Tools that record assignments per application rather than per position do not have this problem, at the cost of a slightly longer initial setup. Neither model is better in the abstract. They suit different rates of change in your machine.

Free and open source: where the cost sits

Dozer costs nothing. The source is public, it is distributed through GitHub, and it can be installed with a Homebrew cask. There is no licence to buy and no account to create.

The useful framing is not that the cost is zero, but that it has moved. It lands in three places.

Installation. Applications distributed outside the App Store go through Gatekeeper on first launch, and depending on how a given build is signed and notarised, you may need to approve it manually. This is straightforward if you have done it before and unsettling if you have not.

Continuity. Independent utilities are maintained when their authors have time and interest. Several well-regarded tools in this exact category have had long quiet periods. If a macOS release changes behaviour, there is no commitment about when or whether it is addressed. That is not a complaint about anyone who publishes their work for free, it is simply the risk that a paid product prices in.

Scope. A tool focused on hiding does hiding well. Whether it also offers keyboard access, or rules that reveal an icon only in certain conditions, varies a great deal across this category, and the free options generally cover less ground here than the paid ones. Three things to check before installing

Spend three minutes on these and you avoid nearly every bad outcome.

When the most recent release was published. The releases page carries dates. Whether there has been activity since the last major macOS release tells you most of what you need to know about how it will behave on a current system. Tools that have been quiet often still work fine, but if one stops working, you are on your own timeline rather than someone else's.

Which macOS versions are supported. Look for a stated minimum in the project description, or recent reports from users on the current release. Installing without knowing this turns any problem into a diagnostic exercise.

What permissions it needs. Tools that manipulate menu bar items typically require accessibility permission in System Settings. On a Mac managed by an employer this can be the deciding factor before price or features enter into it, so check that you can actually grant it. What this approach solves, and what it does not

The boundary model fits some needs precisely and misses others. It is a good match if you want to:

  • Get unused icons out of your visual field.
  • Keep private or irrelevant icons out of screenshots and screen sharing.
  • Reduce the number of things you scan past when reaching for one specific item.

It is a poor match if you want to:

  • Click a hidden icon without expanding first. In this model, reaching something hidden means expanding, locating it, then clicking. Tools that let you click a hidden icon while the bar stays collapsed are solving a different problem, and if you have an icon you touch many times a day, the difference accumulates.
  • Change what is visible automatically based on context, such as revealing a specific icon only while a particular app is in front or when the battery is low.
  • Deal specifically with items being pushed behind a MacBook notch, which different tools handle in different ways.

Prices are omitted deliberately for the paid column, since they move with currency and revisions and should be read on the vendor's own page at the time you buy. Distribution model is the stable axis, and it is the one that predicts your experience.

Note that not all free options are equivalent operationally. Something on the Mac App Store installs without a Gatekeeper prompt and updates through the store. Something distributed on GitHub is installed and updated by you, or by a package manager you maintain. That distinction has nothing to do with quality and everything to do with how much routine attention the tool asks of you. Decide the three groups before you install anything

Whatever tool you end up with, one preparatory step improves the result more than the choice of tool does. Sort your current menu bar items into three groups.

  • Always visible: clock, battery, network state, input source. The things you read by glancing rather than clicking.
  • Hidden until needed: sync status, backups, notification indicators. Things you check occasionally and ignore the rest of the time.
  • Always hidden: utilities you configured once and never interact with again.

With a boundary tool, this maps directly onto the layout. The always-visible group goes on the visible side, the other two go behind the divider. It takes about ten minutes on a machine with twenty resident items, and skipping it is the most common reason people install one of these tools and end up expanding the bar constantly anyway. Write the three groups down somewhere. Menu bar arrangements have to be rebuilt occasionally, whether because you changed tools, reinstalled the system, or set up a second Mac, and a written list turns a twenty minute reconstruction into a five minute one.

What to change first

Sort your icons into the three groups before installing anything, then try the free boundary approach against that list for a few days.
