Getting started
Which versions of macOS does it run on?
macOS 14 or later, on both Apple silicon and Intel. The app is signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens without a warning.
Do I need a card to try it?
No. Download it and every feature works for fourteen days.
How many Macs can I use it on?
One licence covers up to three Macs at the same time. The key belongs to the purchaser and may not be lent or transferred.
Permissions
Why does it need Screen Recording permission?
To show hidden icons exactly as they look, Koffret reads the drawing of the menu bar strip. It reads that strip only. Nothing is stored and nothing leaves your Mac.
Why does it need Accessibility permission?
To locate the items in the menu bar and to open an item’s menu when you click it.
Does it use the network?
Only when registering or checking your licence. We send four things: the licence key, a value that identifies this Mac, the Mac’s name, and the app version. Nothing about your menu bar, your hidden icons or anything read from the screen is ever sent. Once registered, the app holds a receipt for that Mac. After that it keeps working however long you stay offline. What you bought outright will not be switched off from our side.
What it does
Can I change the order of the icons?
Yes. Because macOS keeps the order in each app’s own settings, a change takes effect the next time that app starts.
My layout breaks when I connect a display
Koffret stores the layout and crest settings per display setup and switches between them automatically.
Is it available in other languages?
It ships in thirty languages. Follow the system language or pick one in Settings.
Other apps
Can I run it alongside Bartender or Ice?
Running them together makes both fight over the same item positions and neither behaves. Keep only the one you want.
Can I migrate from Bartender?
Yes. Under Settings > Layout there is an Import from Bartender button. It reads how Bartender sorts your icons into shown, hidden and always hidden, so you do not start from scratch. After importing, press Apply to the menu bar to put it into effect.
Payment
Is there a subscription?
No. It is a one-time purchase of $14.99, and it covers the major version you bought with no time limit.
Do I get the next major version?
A one-time licence covers the major version you bought (1.x, for example) with no time limit, and every fix in that line keeps arriving. When a new major version ships we offer an upgrade at a reduced price. If you skip it, the version you own keeps working.
Can I get a refund?
Because this is a digital product, we do not, as a rule, refund payments already made. The fourteen-day trial is there so you can decide first. If the app does not work because of a fault on our side, we will deal with it individually.
Which payment methods can I use?
By credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover). Apple Pay is also offered where your setup supports it. Payment goes through Stripe, and we never receive your card number.
Can I get a receipt?
After payment, Stripe (our payment processor) emails you a receipt. You can reopen it any time from the link in that email. If you need the name on it changed, just contact us.
