Free menu bar manager for Mac: the facts, and the order to decide in

A crowded menu bar is not a discipline problem. Every app that runs in the background has a reason to put an icon up there, and macOS gives you no single place to prune them. A free menu bar manager solves most of it, and there are several to choose from, but they do not share a macOS floor, a license, or an approach to reaching a hidden icon. Picking by name and finding out afterward that the build will not launch is the usual detour. What follows is the published information, in the order that actually narrows the choice.

Why the menu bar keeps filling up

The right side of the menu bar mixes two different things: items macOS provides, and items apps register for themselves. Cloud storage clients, chat apps, password managers, VPN clients, screen recorders, and backup tools all belong to the second group, and all of them have a defensible reason to be visible. They are running when you are not looking at them, and the icon is how they report that. Nobody chose to have fourteen of them.

The second pressure is physical. On the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and on recent MacBook Air models, the camera housing sits in the middle of the menu bar and splits it in two. The app menus on the left grow when you switch to an application with a deep menu structure. When the two sides meet, the overflow slides behind the camera housing and becomes unclickable. A wide display does not help, because the constraint is the gap, not the screen.

So the situation is structural. That is worth knowing before choosing software, because it means the fix is a rule about what deserves a slot, not a tool that magically creates space.

Clear what macOS controls first

Some of the icons can be removed without installing anything, and doing that first makes every later decision smaller.

In System Settings, the Control Center pane lists the system items individually. Most offer three states: show in the menu bar always, show only while active, or do not show. Bluetooth, Screen Mirroring, Focus, Now Playing, Sound, and Spotlight are all in that list. The clock has its own options panel in the same place. Battery percentage is a switch rather than a separate item. For icons registered by applications, command-drag rearranges them, and some system items can be dragged off the bar entirely with the same gesture.

Items removed this way are genuinely deregistered rather than pushed off-screen. They stay gone across restarts and OS updates, and no extra process runs to keep them gone. The free managers look different and hide identically. Each one places a separator in the menu bar and then expands that separator to an extreme width, so everything to its left slides past the edge of the display. No app is picking up another app's icon and moving it.

One consequence follows for every tool built this way. macOS puts each newly registered icon in the leftmost slot, which is inside the hidden zone, so an app installed or updated ten minutes ago appears with its icon already invisible. It is not a bug and switching tools does not avoid it. The fix is the same everywhere: command-drag the icon to the right of the separator once, and macOS remembers the placement per app.

Where the tools genuinely differ is what happens after something is hidden. Some collapse the separator so the whole bar reopens. Some show the hidden items in a separate strip. Some let you search for an item by name from a hotkey. That difference is what you will feel daily.

Because the macOS floors do not line up, the version on the machine settles part of the question by itself. A Mac on Monterey rules out current Hidden Bar builds and Ice entirely, leaving an older release or a tool with a lower floor. A Mac on macOS 14 or later can run any of them, and the decision moves to behavior.

The feature directions differ too. Ice publishes a hidden-items bar that appears below the real menu bar, a hotkey-driven search for menu bar items, and appearance settings for the bar itself. Hidden Bar is deliberately minimal: an arrow, a separator, an optional always-hidden second zone, and an auto-collapse delay. Dozer works with multiple separators to toggle groups of icons together. None of these is a ranking. They are different answers to the question of how you want to reach something you hid.

License matters less than people expect for personal use and more than expected inside a company. MIT and MPL-2.0 both permit use at work, but organizations that maintain an approved software list generally want the distribution source recorded, and a GitHub release installed by hand is harder to record than an App Store item with a receipt. If the Mac is managed by an employer, checking the channel before installing avoids having to uninstall later.

Three things to settle right after installing

Whichever tool goes on, the same three items come up immediately, and each one produces a symptom that reads as "it does not work".

Login items. A background utility that does not launch at login has to be started by hand after every restart. On macOS 13 and later this is registered in System Settings under General and Login Items. If the registration was declined once, enabling it there and then toggling the app's own preference off and on restores it.

Permissions. Tools that manipulate menu bar items may ask for Accessibility access. Declining it produces the specific failure where the separator appears but nothing ever hides. Access can be granted later in System Settings under Privacy and Security.

A keyboard shortcut. Assigning expand and collapse to a hotkey removes the trip to the top of the screen. Function keys can display differently in the settings interface than the key cap suggests, so verify the binding once after setting it.

The order to decide in

Free tools are cheap to swap, so trial and error works. It just works faster in this order.

Start with the macOS version, which eliminates candidates outright. Then look at the distribution channel: an App Store install updates itself, while GitHub releases and Homebrew put the update step on you. Then check whether releases are still arriving, because the menu bar is not a stable surface and an OS update can break the hiding mechanism until a tool catches up. Then decide how you want to reach a hidden icon, since that is the daily experience. Finally, confirm you are downloading the project you think you are: Hidden Bar in particular has several forks with near-identical names and icons, and some of them have to be built from source before they can be tried.

Where free stops being enough

A free manager reduces the number of visible icons. Two complaints tend to survive it.

The first is the round trip. An icon you press a few times a day is now behind an expand, a scan, a click, and a collapse. If that describes something you touch ten times a day, the cost is real and it recurs. What removes it is being able to open a hidden icon's menu while the bar stays collapsed, so the whole sequence becomes one action. The second is conditionality. Show the meeting icon only during meetings. Show the battery item only when the charge is low. Show the VPN indicator only while connected. That is rule-based visibility rather than a separator, and it is a different piece of machinery. There is also a maintenance question that has nothing to do with features. The menu bar is not a documented, stable surface for third-party software, so a macOS release can change how it is composed and stop a hiding mechanism from working. When that happens, the practical difference between tools is how quickly a fix ships and whether there is anywhere to report the problem. A repository with recent releases and open issues gives you one kind of answer, and a paid product with a support address gives you another. Neither guarantees a fast fix. Both are better than a project whose last release predates the OS you are running.

Neither complaint is an argument against free software. On a Mac with seven menu bar items and no need for conditional behavior, a separator is the complete answer and anything more is overhead. The reason to keep the question open is that the number of background apps on a working Mac tends to go up rather than down, and the point at which a separator alone stops being enough usually arrives without being noticed.

What to change first

Set the rule before choosing the tool. Keep an icon visible only if seeing it tells you something you need at a glance, or if you press it several times a day, and put everything else behind a separator for a week. If nothing bothers you after that week, the free tool was the right answer.
