Menu bar icons overlap the notch: what macOS is doing

Open a video editor on a 14 inch MacBook Pro and three menu bar icons vanish. Switch back to Finder and they return. Nothing crashed, nothing was uninstalled, and no setting changed. The camera housing in the middle of the display is involved, but not in the way most descriptions of the problem suggest. Understanding what macOS actually does with that strip of screen decides which of the available fixes will work and which will waste an afternoon.

The notch does not hide icons. It removes their space

The common description is that icons slide behind the notch and become unreachable. That is not what happens. macOS treats the camera housing as unavailable area and never places menu bar content there. Nothing is drawn underneath it, so there is nothing hiding.

What the notch does is subtract width from a strip that was already tight. The menu bar has two claimants. On the left, the frontmost application's own menus grow rightward from the Apple logo. On the right, the clock and Control Center hold their position and everything else stacks leftward from there. The two sides meet somewhere in the middle, and on a notched Mac they meet at the edges of a solid block they cannot cross.

When the right-hand stack runs into the notch boundary, the items that would have needed that space are removed from the layout entirely. They are not shrunk, not stacked, not moved to a second row. The app owning the icon is still running and still working. It simply has no position on screen for the duration.

This is why the symptom is so specific. Icons disappear all at once at the same point rather than gradually crowding, and the number that disappears changes with whichever application happens to be in front.

Which Macs this affects, and how much

The camera housing appears on MacBook Pro models from 2021 onward, the 13 inch MacBook Air from 2022 onward, and the 15 inch MacBook Air introduced afterwards. Desktop Macs and external displays have an uninterrupted menu bar, which is why the same set of applications behaves differently the moment a laptop is docked.

Size does not rescue the situation as much as expected. A 16 inch MacBook Pro has more total width than a 14 inch, but it also tends to run at a scaled resolution that keeps text at a comfortable size, so the number of points available to the menu bar does not grow proportionally. Meanwhile the notch takes a similar absolute bite on both.

There is a second consequence that gets misread as a separate bug. When the application menus on the left cannot fit either, macOS truncates them and puts the remainder behind an overflow chevron. Users see a doubled chevron appear in a menu bar they have never seen one in before, assume a third-party tool has installed itself, and start uninstalling things. It is macOS handling a shortage, and it goes away when the shortage does.

Check whether the notch is the cause at all

Two tests separate a notch shortage from the other reasons a menu bar icon can go missing, and both take seconds.

The first is the Finder test. Click on the desktop so Finder becomes the frontmost application, then look at the bar again. Finder has a short menu list, so it leaves the maximum amount of room for extras. If the missing icons come back, the shortage is real and the frontmost application was the trigger. If they stay missing even with Finder in front, the count is too high regardless of which application is running, and the notch is only part of the picture.

The second is the docking test, and it only applies to a laptop that gets connected to a monitor. Run the Finder test once on the built-in display and once on an external one. An external display has no camera housing and usually more width, so if every icon appears there and only some appear on the built-in screen, the difference is the notch and the smaller panel rather than anything installed.

A third case is worth ruling out because it looks the same from the outside. If an icon is visible but produces no menu when clicked, the layout is fine and the process drawing that icon has stopped responding. Quitting and relaunching the owning application clears it, and for items supplied by macOS, running killall SystemUIServer in Terminal rebuilds them immediately. Chasing that symptom through display settings gets nowhere.

Running these before touching settings is not caution for its own sake. The fixes in the next sections all involve giving something up, and giving it up for the wrong diagnosis means paying the cost without the benefit.

Count what is competing for the space

Before changing anything, get an accurate count of what is in the strip. It is almost always higher than people expect, because a good share of it was never chosen.

Open System Settings and go to Control Center. Every module listed there with menu bar display turned on is taking width whether or not it has been clicked this month. Battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sound, Focus, Screen Mirroring, Display, Now Playing and Spotlight are all candidates, and several are on by default.

Then look at the third-party side. Cloud storage clients, backup software, VPN clients, input method switchers, update checkers and hardware utilities each add one icon, and some add two. A machine set up over three or four years commonly carries a dozen without anyone having decided to have a dozen.

Finally, note which application was in front when the icons went missing. Applications with long menu lists take more of the left side and therefore push the meeting point further right. If the icons only disappear in one specific application, the total count may be fine and only that application is tipping it over the edge.

Doing the count first matters because the fixes below are not interchangeable. Removing modules you actually use, in order to solve a shortage caused by one heavyweight application, leaves the Mac permanently worse configured for a problem that only appeared twice a week.

Four ways to get the room back

There are four levers, and they trade off differently.

The resolution lever is the one most often missed. Menu bar capacity is measured in points rather than physical pixels, so choosing a setting toward More Space in System Settings under Displays lengthens the bar in the only unit that matters. On a 14 inch laptop the accompanying text size is usually the deal breaker. On a large external display it costs nothing worth mentioning.

Reordering with Command held down does not create room, but it decides who survives. Drag the icons you press daily toward the right, and the ones you rarely touch toward the left, and the shortage starts falling on things you do not miss. The gesture is the same one used to remove system items: hold Command, drag the item clear of the bar, and macOS-supplied extras are taken off. Icons belonging to third-party applications cannot be removed this way, because the application decides whether to publish one, so those have to be turned off in the application's own settings.

What full screen changes and what it does not

Searching for the notch leads most people to a setting called Scale to fit below built-in camera, found in the Finder information window for an individual application. It is worth being clear about what this does. It only affects that application in full screen, where it moves the entire window area below the camera housing and leaves a black band across the top. It has no effect on the desktop, and it will not bring back a menu bar icon that is missing while you work in windows.

Full screen itself removes the menu bar from view until the pointer reaches the top edge, which is a different situation again. The same layout rules apply the moment it reveals itself, so a bar that was short of room in windowed mode is short of room here too.

There is a related setting under Control Center called automatic hiding of the menu bar, with separate options for full screen and for the desktop. It changes when the bar is visible, not how much fits in it. If the goal is to stop hunting for icons, hiding the bar makes the hunt slower rather than shorter.

Where a menu bar manager fits

The levers above all work by having fewer things or a longer bar. A menu bar manager takes a different route: keep every icon installed, but give most of them a place that is not the visible strip. Items you rarely need sit to the left of a divider and come out only when asked for, so the notch never has a chance to squeeze them out.

Two details separate the implementations, and both are worth checking before choosing one. The first is what happens when a hidden icon needs to be pressed. If the whole bar has to expand, then be pressed, then re-collapse, the interaction is barely shorter than scrolling through a crowded bar. Tools that open a hidden item's menu in place, without expanding the bar, remove that round trip. The second is whether hidden icons keep their real appearance, since battery percentages, recording indicators and unread badges are the entire reason some of those icons exist. A third detail is easy to overlook until a monitor gets unplugged. The amount of room available changes with the display arrangement, so a layout tuned at the desk can be short by three slots on the train. Tools that store the arrangement per display setup and switch automatically save repeating the work each time, and it is worth checking whether that is handled before settling on one.

One caveat applies to every tool in this category. Rearranging another application's menu bar icon requires Accessibility permission in System Settings under Privacy and Security. What to change first

Start in Control Center and turn off the modules you have never pressed, because that is free and takes two minutes. Then Command-drag the icons you use daily toward the right so the shortage lands on things you do not miss.
