User guide
Koffret keeps your Mac's menu bar tidy. It hides the icons you rarely use and brings them back whenever you need them.
Laid out in the same order as Settings in the app. The same text is available inside Koffret, from the “?” at the bottom right of Settings.
Setup
If you are new to Koffret, follow the steps in this section first. It takes about 10 minutes from download to a tidy menu bar.
Download and install
Koffret requires macOS 14 or later and runs on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
- Click Download on the download page. Koffret.zip is saved to your Downloads folder
- Double-click Koffret.zip to unzip it (Safari unzips it for you automatically)
- Drag Koffret into the Applications folder in Finder
- Double-click Koffret in Applications to launch it. A gem-shaped crest appears on the right side of the menu bar
The first time you open it, macOS asks: "Koffret" is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? Koffret is notarized by Apple, so click Open. You will not see this message again.
If macOS says the app cannot be opened, choose System Settings from the Apple menu, open Privacy & Security, scroll down to the Security section, and click Open Anyway. Confirm with your Mac login password (or Touch ID) and Koffret launches.
Activate your license key
Every feature is available for 14 days from your first launch. If you received a license key by email, through a purchase or a bonus, activate it as follows.
- Open the email that contains your license key, select the whole key, and copy it
- Right-click the crest in the menu bar (or Control-click it) and choose Settings…
- Click the License tab at the top of the Settings window
- In the License key row, paste the key into the field that reads "Paste your key" with ⌘V
- In the field below it, "Email address used for the purchase", enter the address the key was sent to
- Click Activate. When Current status changes to Pro, you are done
One license covers up to 3 Macs. When you switch Macs, click Remove in the "Remove this Mac" row on the License tab of the old Mac, then activate the same key on the new Mac.
First steps
Hide the icons you rarely use and tidy up your menu bar.
- Right-click the crest, choose Settings…, and open the Layout tab
- Click Allow accessibility and turn Koffret on in the System Settings window that opens. Koffret needs this to read your menu bar icons
- Drag each icon into one of the three rows: top (always on the menu bar), middle (shown via the crest), or bottom (always hidden)
- Click Apply to the menu bar. Each app picks up the new layout the next time it starts
- Click the crest to show or hide the hidden icons. If you are asked for Screen Recording permission the first time, turn Koffret on in System Settings
General
Startup
- Launch at login
- Starts Koffret automatically when you log in to your Mac.
Reveal
- How the popup opens
- Chooses what you operate to open the popup of hidden icons. “Click the crest” opens it from the crest in the menu bar. With “Click the notch” or “Rest the pointer on the notch”, the notch (the camera cut-out at the top of the screen) becomes the handle and the crest disappears from that display. Only one of the two is ever a handle, so you never get two of them side by side. Displays without a notch keep the crest.
- Where the crest sits
- Puts the crest at the right end of the icons (next to the clock) or at the left end (just right of the notch).
- Hide revealed icons again after
- After hidden icons are brought back to the bar, they are hidden again once this time passes.
- Reveal when scrolling over the menu bar
- Moving the mouse wheel (or scrolling with two fingers) over the menu bar reveals the hidden icons.
- Reveal when the pointer rests on the menu bar
- Leaving the pointer on the menu bar reveals the hidden icons.
- Reveal briefly when a hidden icon changes
- Watches badges and numbers, and shows a changed icon on the bar for a while. The duration can be set under Shortcuts > “How long a changed icon stays visible”.
Click the crest
The crest in the menu bar is the handle
Click the notch
The notch is the handle, and no crest appears
Popup
- Icon arrangement
- Choose whether icons in the popup are laid out horizontally or vertically.
- Close the popup after
- The popup closes automatically after this time.
- Position
- Drag an empty part of the popup to move it. The position is remembered per display setup. “Reset position” puts it back to the default.

Layout
- Sorts your menu bar icons into three groups: shown, hidden, and always hidden. Drag icons in the list to change their group, then press “Apply to the menu bar” to write the new order.
- The crest
- This is the mark Koffret puts in your menu bar. It is shaped like a gem: light blue while icons are hidden, gold while they are showing. Clicking it hides and shows them. In the list it sits among the icons, so you can drag it left and right like any of them.
- Presets
- Save the current layout under a name and recall it later. You can assign a keyboard shortcut, or a trigger that switches presets automatically when a certain app comes to the front.
- Saved per display setup
- The layout and crest settings are saved per display setup and switch automatically when you connect or disconnect a display.
Sorting
Appearance
- Icon spacing
- Tightens the spacing between menu bar icons so more of them fit.
- Hide desktop icons
- Hides the files and folders sitting on your desktop.

Menu bar appearance
- Use a custom background
- Lays a colored or patterned background over the menu bar. The color is drawn over the text and icons too, so lower the background opacity if it gets hard to read.
- Theme
- Picking a built-in theme (Graphite, Midnight, Cosmos, and so on) switches the style, colors and opacity together. Changing any individual value afterwards turns the theme into “Custom”.
- Style
- Choose from solid, gradient, stripes, dots, grid, or starfield.
- Colors
- The left swatch is the main color (solid fill, left end of the gradient, pattern background). The right swatch is the accent (right end of the gradient; lines, dots and stars).
- Background opacity
- How strongly the whole background (color and pattern) is laid over the bar. The lower it is, the more the original menu bar shows through.
- Gradient direction
- The angle of the gradient. 0° runs left to right, 90° bottom to top.
- Make the menu text white
- Koffret makes a copy of your desktop picture with the top darkened and sets it as the wallpaper. macOS picks the menu text color from the wallpaper's brightness, so the text turns white. Turning this off puts your original picture back.
- Keep it bright enough to read
- macOS decides the color of the menu text, so it cannot be changed from here. Instead the background is lightened automatically until the text is readable.
- Pattern size
- Changes the spacing of stripes, dots and grid, and the density of the starfield.
- Draw a line along the bottom
- Draws a thin line along the bottom edge of the menu bar to separate it from the desktop.

The mark at the far left
- Replace the Apple menu artwork
- Replaces the artwork at the very left of the menu bar with the one you pick. Clicking it still opens the same menu as before.
- Shape
- Choose the old mark, a heart, star, leaf, bolt, moon, snowflake, flame, paw, crown, peace sign, or the Koffret crest. Pick “Your own image” to use the file you choose below.
- Your own image
- Point this at any image you like. A PNG with a transparent background looks best.
- Fill
- Six stripes (the old look), one color, a gradient, or as in the image. “As in the image” is only for your own image.
- Colors
- The left swatch is the single color and the start of the gradient. The right one is the end of the gradient.
- Gradient direction
- 0° runs left to right, 90° bottom to top.
- Size
- Makes the artwork bigger or smaller than the original mark.
Shortcuts
- Toggle hide and show
- Shows or hides the hidden icons with a single key.
- Search icons by name
- Opens a search panel where you can find an icon by its app name and act on it right away.

Troubleshooting
Common issues
- The icon list is empty
- Koffret needs Accessibility permission. Click Allow accessibility on the Layout tab, then turn Koffret on under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility.
- You see "Screen Recording permission is off"
- Turn Koffret on under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording, then restart Koffret.
- The license key is not accepted
- Make sure you copied the entire key and that the email address matches the one the key was sent to. If 3 Macs are already registered, remove one you no longer use.
