Menu bar hidden in full screen on a Mac: settings and fixes

Take an app full screen on a Mac and the menu bar goes away. The clock, the battery, the network indicator, and every background app icon go with it, and reaching the File menu now costs a deliberate trip to the top of the display. This is the shipped behaviour rather than a bug, and there is a single setting that changes it. There is also a second, less obvious situation, which is a menu bar that refuses to slide down even when the pointer is where it should be. The two have completely different causes.

Hiding in full screen is the default

Whether the bar hides itself is set in System Settings, in the Control Center pane, under a control offering four choices: Always, On Desktop Only, In Full Screen Only, and Never. A new Mac arrives on In Full Screen Only, which is why the bar stays put on the desktop and disappears the moment an app fills the screen.

The reasoning is that full screen means giving the display to one app, and a permanent strip across the top works against that. Presentations, video, and reading are the cases the default is tuned for.

Nothing is disabled while it is hidden. Push the pointer against the very top edge of the display and the bar slides down with the app menus and every status icon intact. Move away and it retracts. It also appears on its own while switching between full screen apps and when a notification arrives.

So the accurate description is folded away rather than turned off. Deciding whether to change it is a trade between vertical space and the cost of that pointer trip, and the right answer depends on how often you actually read the bar.

The setting, and which option to pick

In System Settings, open Control Center and find the control for automatically hiding and showing the menu bar. Setting it to Never keeps the bar on screen in full screen apps. Setting it to Always hides it on the desktop as well.

On versions of macOS before Ventura the same control lives in Dock and Menu Bar and appears as a checkbox for hiding the bar in full screen. If a set of instructions does not match what is on screen, this rename is usually why. The behaviour being changed is the same.

Which option fits depends on what full screen is being used for. For video, reading, or anything presented to other people, the default is right and there is nothing to change. For an editor, a terminal, or a browser used full screen for hours at a time, with frequent glances at the clock or a sync indicator, Never removes a repeated movement that adds up.

The cost is honest and small: the height of the bar comes out of the app's usable area. On a 13 inch laptop where vertical space is already the constraint, that is noticeable. On a large external display it is close to irrelevant.

There is a second effect that is easy to miss until it happens. With the bar permanently visible, a window dragged toward the top of the screen no longer sits flush against the edge, and anything that relied on that last strip of pixels, such as a tiling layout or a manually sized window, shifts down slightly. Layouts settle again after a day, but it is worth changing the setting at the start of a working session rather than in the middle of one.

One limitation is worth knowing in advance. The setting is global. It cannot be applied per app, so there is no configuration where video hides the bar and a text editor keeps it. Whichever option you choose applies to everything that goes full screen.

When the bar will not come back

If the bar does not slide down, work through these in order.

The pointer is not far enough. The reveal triggers on the topmost row of pixels. Stopping a few pixels short does nothing, and a gentle trackpad flick often stops short. Push firmly upward so the pointer is pinned against the edge.

The second cause is multiple displays. The bar only reveals on the display that owns it. If the Mission Control option for displays having separate Spaces is enabled, in System Settings under Desktop and Dock, each display has its own bar. If it is off, only the main display does, and pushing against the top of any other screen produces nothing. Third are hot corners. With an action assigned to the top left or top right corner, an upward movement that drifts into a corner fires that action instead. Testing at the middle of the top edge rules this in or out immediately.

Fourth is an app that owns the screen by its own means. Presentation playback, games, and some video players take over the display without using the macOS full screen mechanism, and in that state the menu bar does not exist to be revealed. Leaving usually means Escape or the app's own exit control rather than anything at the system level.

A fast way to narrow all of this down is to leave full screen entirely, using the green button at the top left of the window or Control Command F. If the bar behaves normally on the desktop, the cause is specific to full screen. If it is still missing there, the setting is probably on Always, or you are looking at a display that does not have a menu bar.

The notch changes the width, not just the look

On MacBook Pro models at 14 and 16 inches, and MacBook Air models with the same design, a camera housing sits in the middle of the top edge. In full screen the strip containing it is drawn black and the app begins below it. Revealing the menu bar overlays it on that strip.

The part that catches people out is the width. No item can be placed where the housing is, so the usable width is smaller than the screen size suggests. Application menus on the left take priority, so a full screen app with a long menu can push the status icons on the right off the end of the available space.

This shows up in full screen more often than on the desktop, because the apps people run full screen tend to be the ones with the longest menus. An icon that is present on the desktop and missing in full screen has usually not been turned off. It ran out of room.

Confirming it takes two attempts. Bring an app with a short menu, such as Finder, to the front and reveal the bar again. If the missing icons return, it was width. If they do not, that icon has been switched off in its own app or removed in System Settings. The first result changes depending on which app is in front. The second is consistent, which is what tells them apart.

Full screen is its own Space, and that explains the flicker

Sending an app full screen does not just resize it. macOS moves it into a Space of its own, which is why it disappears from the desktop it was on and why Mission Control shows it as a separate tile along the top.

That detail explains several things that otherwise look random. Moving between Spaces with a four finger swipe or Control and an arrow key briefly shows the menu bar during the transition, then hides it again once the full screen app settles. Command Tab can switch to an app in another Space and take the whole screen with it, which reads as the desktop vanishing. And the Dock behaves the same way the menu bar does, staying out of sight until the pointer is pushed against the bottom edge.

It also explains a persistent source of confusion on multiple display setups. With separate Spaces enabled for each display, only the display running the full screen app loses its bar, while the others keep theirs. With the option off, the layout behaves as one large canvas and a full screen app claims the main display, so the bar to reveal is on that display and not on whichever screen the pointer happens to be near.

None of this is configurable in any useful sense. Full screen and Spaces are one mechanism, and the menu bar behaviour follows from it. The value in knowing it is diagnostic: a bar that seems to appear and disappear on its own is almost always following Space transitions rather than misbehaving, and it means the fix is a setting rather than a restart.

What to keep in the bar if you live in full screen

The more time the bar spends hidden, the less any information placed there is actually read. That changes what belongs in it.

The second row is the one that repays thinking about. Keeping the bar visible costs a small amount of height and removes a movement repeated dozens of times a day. If the bar is being revealed that often, it is not really hidden, it is just slower.

The last row is a different problem. During a shared screen or a screenshot, revealing the bar exposes every background app icon at once, and there is no way to tidy it in the moment.
